Licensing is determined by a number of factors. First, examine this flow chart to help determine what license is required based on GVW. In this context, GVW is one part tow vehicle and one part trailer. Therefore, your license is dependent on your tow vehicle as much as it is the trailer you are interested in. Another factor to consider is whether your trailer will be used for commercial or business purposes. If so, you will need a DOT number. Use this flow chart to determine if a DOT number is required.
